Alma Mater due back April 9

URBANA — Mark your calendars, everybody.

Alma Mater will return home to the University of Illinois campus on Wednesday, April 9.

A rededication ceremony is planned for June 6. Details are expected to be announced soon.

“There are a lot of logistics that have to be in place to make this go smoothly,” said Jim Lev, an architect with UI Facilities and Services, in a written statement. “The most important thing is that we do this carefully and safely.”

The sculpture, created by artist Lorado Taft in 1929, was removed in August 2012, and sent to a conservator for restoration due to damage from water corrosion.

The statue has had more than 1,000 bolts replaced, its exterior surface laser-cleaned and its original color restored to a natural bronze finish.

Lev said the reinstallation would require a lot of site preparation. The area will be blocked off to allow a crane and flatbed truck access to the site.
