Walk to school program to start at Urbana school in April

Some elementary school students in Urbana will be participating in a new program next month that's aimed at promoting a healthy and safe lifestyle.

Starting Apr. 15, some Leal Elementary School students will be walking to school under adult supervision as part of the walking school bus initiative.  Program Coordinator Adam Kriska said the effort is a grant-funded project in conjunction with the Safe Routes to School program through the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District.

Kriska said the process of getting the students to school will be modeled in a way similar to a normal school bus.

Kriska added that the walking school bus program is a great way to promote physical activity and to reduce childhood obesity.  He said he hopes to expand the program to more schools in the fall, and that volunteers will play a big role in how much it can be expanded.
