Danville has four options for new fee

DANVILLE — City residents will most likely have a new fee to pay later this year to help fund city services.

Still unknown is which fee, who'd have to pay it and how much it would cost.

Since early this year, Danville officials have been tossing back and forth various ways to generate new money to close a gap between revenues and increasing costs in the fire division next fiscal year, which begins May 1.

Tonight, aldermen may come to a final decision. On their agenda are four different options for a new fee for city residents. Only one of them saves two firefighter positions set to be eliminated — the $5 monthly fire fee.

Mayor Scott Eisenhauer said although all four fee options are on the city council meeting agenda — an emergency medical response fee and three versions of a fire fee — the intent is for approval of just one.

The EMS fee, of $300, is strictly a user fee charged only to patients treated by the fire department during emergency medical calls. The three fire fees would cost most property owners in the city $5, $3.50 or $2 a month.

All three fire fees would generate more revenue than the ambulance fee. Each involves charging homeowners, businesses and organizations between $2 and $30 a month based on the square feet of their rooftops. Although the fire fees are capped at $30 a month, an individual or business with multiple properties would have to pay up to $30 a month for each property.
