Final votes near on Catlin-Jamaica school consolidation

Final votes near on Catlin-Jamaica school consolidation

A proposed merger between the Catlin and Jamaica school districts could be on its way to the voters by the end of next week.

The so-called "committee of ten" that's been overseeing the consolidation will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Catlin High School to go over final recommendations.  On Thursday, the Jamaica school board will vote to put the merger on the fall ballot (Here is the school board agenda.).  And next Thursday, the Catlin school board will do the same.

Catlin Superintendent Gary Lewis said both communities seem to be on board with the consolidation.

The plan is to have each district keep its grade school, send middle school students to Jamaica and send high school students to Catlin.
