More fire chief candidates coming to Champaign

CHAMPAIGN — Even more candidates will come in to interview for Champaign's open fire chief job a month after city officials sat down with three finalists.

Two candidates will be interviewed on Thursday and Friday. This is the third slate of job seekers city officials have met with since they opened the search for a new fire chief last year.

Champaign has been without a fire chief since December, when Doug Forsman retired. Longtime Capt. Dave Ferber has been acting fire chief since.

City officials hoped to have selected a new fire chief before December but reopened their search when they decided their first group of five finalists did not meet the full breadth of what they were looking for.

Another three sat down last month with panels of community members, area fire officials, Champaign Fire Department employees and other city staff members.

The two who will visit next week are Bloomington, Ind., fire Capt. Jon Musgrave, who has 24 years' experience; and R. Vance Swisher, a 20-year fire service veteran who holds several high-ranking positions in Rochester and Stewartville, Minn.

The city also continues to seek a new human resources director. Three candidates for that position will be interviewed Monday.
