Check by officer results in two arrests
RANTOUL — A Rantoul man was arrested after police reported finding a loaded gun and five bags of assorted suspected drugs on his person.
Steve Terrell Moffett, 22, was arrested for armed violence, manufacture or delivery of 30 to 500 grams of cannabis, manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance and unlawful use of a weapon.
According to a police report, an officer was in the 1700 block of Pheasant Ridge Drive in Rantoul on Saturday night when he saw a white Buick, occupied by several people, parked by the side of the road.
When the officer checked the registration of the vehicle, his computer showed an outstanding warrant for the arrest of the owner, so he approached the car.
When he reached the Buick, the officer detected a strong odor of suspected marijuana.
He then arrested the front-seat passenger, Gregory Brumfield, 36, who listed an address in Rantoul, for the outstanding Illinois Department of Corrections warrant.
The officer also asked the other people in the car about the odor. At that point, Moffett, who was a back-seat passenger, admitted to having a cannabis cigarette and handed the cigarette to the officer.
When police searched Moffett, they found a loaded .22-caliber revolver, five clear plastic bags and a black digital scale.
According to the report, the bags contained 30.8 grams of marijuana, 6 grams of Ecstasy, 5.3 grams of Ecstasy, 1.8 grams of cocaine and 14.3 grams of cannabis.
Rantoul police arrested Moffett and took him to the Champaign County Jail.
