Death of Tuscola man hit by a train ruled accidental

TUSCOLA — Douglas County Coroner Joseph Victor has determined that the death of a man who was hit by a train last month was accidental.

Matthew J. Wilke, 26, of Tuscola was found by the tracks near Ohio and East North Central streets in Tuscola by a passer-by early March 9. The passer-by then reported it to Tuscola police.

Victor pronounced Mr. Wilke dead at the scene at 7:30 a.m.

An autopsy performed in Urbana showed that the man died from blunt force trauma injuries from pedestrian-train impact.

Following a review of the case, Victor announced Monday that his office had determined the cause of death to be accidental multiple blunt force injuries to the body.
