Rantoul teen arrested following residential burglary
URBANA — A Rantoul teenager is due back in court May 6 following his arrest in connection with a residential burglary over the weekend in Rantoul.
Christopher Anthony Barrigan, 18, was charged Monday with residential burglary, resisting or obstructing a peace officer and retail theft.
Barrigan is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $35,000 bond.
According to a police report, officers were called to an apartment building in the 1341 Harmon Drive, Rantoul, at 5 p.m. Friday.
They spoke to a woman who had just returned home when she discovered that somebody had broken down the door, entered her apartment and took money and other items.
The victim told police that she suspected Barrigan, who lived in another apartment in the same building. Police officers attempted to find Barrigan but were unsuccessful.
Police returned to Barrigan’s apartment at 1:05 p.m. Saturday and knocked on the door.
Barrigan did not answer, but police could see him looking out the window.
After police discovered there was an active warrant for Barrigan’s arrest in connection with a retail theft in 2013, officers set up a perimeter around the apartment building and waited until they could get a search warrant for Barrigan’s apartment.
After getting the search warrant, police entered the apartment, arrested Barrigan and took him to the county jail.
None of the stolen money or other stolen items were found in the apartment, according to the report.
