Man sentenced to prison for DUI

URBANA — An Urbana man who struck a car and kept going while drunk was sentenced last week in Champaign County Circuit Court to four years in prison.

Lance D. Burnam, 32, of the 1200 block of North Berkley Avenue, pleaded guilty to aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol — his third conviction for DUI.

Assistant State's Attorney Elizabeth Dornik said officers were called to a report of a hit and run in the 400 block of Broadway Avenue in Urbana. The woman who was hit said she followed the driver to his home, where he went inside.

Dornik said the woman told police that the driver's speech was slurred and he couldn't walk without stumbling.

Police found Burnam and noted he had bloodshot, watery eyes, slurred speech, and the strong odor of alcohol coming from him.

He did not perform well on field sobriety tests and later submitted to a breath test, which showed he had a blood-alcohol content of 0.22 percent.

Dornik said besides the two previous DUIs, one of which involved injury to another person, Burnam also had criminal convictions for mob action, aggravated battery, battery and theft.

What a sweetheart.

Why does it take 3 DUI convictions to lock someone up?
