Alma Mater stand-ins drop by for visit

If she was watching, Alma Mater would have gotten a glimpse of her former green self Wednesday.

Among the fans on hand were UI senior Katie Chan and junior Clare Curtin, who stood in for Alma shortly after the sculpture left campus in 2012.

Wearing their elaborate costumes sewn by Krannert's costume shop, they snapped selfies with hard hats during Wednesday's reinstallation. (The original Labor, Arpan Roy, graduated last spring.)

"This is really special to us, having portrayed her in the past," said Chan, who portrayed Alma. "We wanted to show the old vs. the new Alma."

Added Curtin (aka Learning): "I feel like Alma passed the baton to us, and we kind of filled in while she was gone. Now we're passing the baton back to her."

They also (mostly) like her new color.

"It's different, but it works for her," Curtin said.
