Urbana man wanted for sexual molestation of a child

URBANA — Champaign County sheriff's detectives are looking for an Urbana man wanted for sexually molesting a young girl who was a customer in his wife's day care operation.

Lt. Curt Apperson said deputies are looking for Antonio Macedo-Martinez, 59, who listed an address in the first block of Northwood Drive in the Northwood Trailer Park in northeast Urbana.

He was charged in a warrant issued Monday in Champaign County Circuit Court with predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse. Conviction of the predatory charges carries a mandatory prison sentence of between six and 30 years.

Apperson said the charges involve only one victim but police continue to investigate and have other children to interview, he said.

The allegations of sexual abuse came to light in late March when the child, who is under the age of 13, told a parent what had happened to her, Apperson said. The child lives in Urbana so the mother reported the allegation to Urbana police, who then transferred the case to Champaign County sheriff's deputies because the mobile home where Macedo-Martinez was living is in the county.

The charges allege sex acts that happened with the girl between Jan. 1 and March 25. Apperson said that range of dates is an estimate based on what the child was able to report to a forensic interviewer with the Child Advocacy Center.

Apperson said Macedo-Martinez' wife was running an unlicensed operation so police are unsure how long she had been operating it since there are no records. It has been shut down.

Deputies talked to Macedo-Martinez in a non-custodial setting last week but did not arrest him immediately, instead choosing to obtain the arrest warrant. Judge Richard Klaus set bond on the warrant at $500,000.

Apperson said Macedo-Martinez was last seen on Friday. Police believe he has left the area with his wife, Ana Maria Gonzalez, but they don't know what method of travel they might have used. Apperson said there are still vehicles outside the home.

"We don't believe he's in Champaign County," Apperson said.

Macedo-Martinez is described as being Hispanic, about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, weighing 150 pounds. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the sheriff's office at 217-384-1213 or Crimestoppers at 217-373-8477. Information may also be sent anonymously online at http://www.373tips.com or by cellphone text message by sending CCTIP plus the information to CRIMES (274637).

Crimestoppers will pay a reward if the information leads to an arrest. Cash rewards are also paid for information on other felony crimes or fugitives in the Champaign County area.
