Man sent to prison for beating woman

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted he beat a woman badly enough to hospitalize her has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Dwight Hayes, 28, of the 1100 block of Hollyhill Drive, pleaded guilty Thursday before Judge Richard Klaus to aggravated battery, admitting that on Feb. 10 he beat a 37-year-old woman in the head.

The incident happened about 6:30 p.m. at a house in the 1500 block of South Philo Road in Urbana where Hayes, the victim, and two other people were drinking and socializing.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark said the victim had only known Hayes a short while. The two got in an argument and he punched her in the head until she fell to the floor, then he continued to kick her.

The woman sustained severe facial injuries, Clark said.

She said Hayes had a prior adjudication for criminal sexual abuse as a juvenile and adult convictions for resisting arrest, retail theft and failure to register as a sex offender.

He was given credit for 60 days already served in the county jail.
