New village attorney put to work immediately

LODA — The board met its new attorney for the first time and immediately gave Jennifer Simutis several tasks to complete:

— File notice with two owners of abandoned vehicles who have been warned once already that they are in violation of the village ordinance covering unlicensed and inoperable vehicles.

— Notify another resident that she will be fined $250 for a third instance of unlawful burning.

— Contact a landlord who was already notified that his tenant cannot lawfully run what amounts to a salvage yard from his home.

Simutis, of Watseka, also said she will speak to Iroquois County sheriff's officers and the state's attorney about problems with two children under age 10. Trustee John Zalaker said the children have attempted to set fire to his house and that he personally contacted the sheriff and state's attorney but has seen no results other than the deputy saying Department of Children and Family Services will be contacted. The juveniles have also been accused of stealing items from the local convenience store.
