Road work planned in Paxton
PAXTON — There will be lots of contractor activity in Paxton beginning later this month. Street department superintendent Randy Swan told the city council that Iroquois Paving secured the state bid to improve state Route 9 west of Interstate 57 and through the easternmost city limits.
The work is set to begin April 28 and will include pavement milling, repaving, sidewalk and gutter work and wheelchair-accessible cuts. The work will begin at the Baltimore Aircoil road following the highway but skipping the interstate overpass, onto Patton but skipping the railroad bridge. On Route 45 the work will extend south to Franklin Street and north to State Street. Pells Street will be redone from 45 east through Stockholm Road.
"There will be a lot of traffic with sometimes a lane closed," Swan said. "It will be a somewhat messy spring and summer."
The street and alley committee is set to meet April 28 following an adjourned council meeting to amend the current fiscal year budget. Swan said it would be advantageous to the city to pass its motor fuel tax fund road work project as soon as possible. He sees the possibility of a better bid from the contractor if the company is already working in town.
