Fire destroys shed north of Mahomet

MAHOMET — Fire has destroyed a shed at a home just north of Mahomet.

Cornbelt firefighters were called to the 400 block of County Road 2425 N shortly after 4 p.m.

Champaign County sheriff's Sgt. Tony Shaw said preliminary information suggests that the resident was burning brush near the shed and the wind whipped the flames toward the shed, which is behind the house.

The fire did not threaten the residence, he said.

Firefighters from the Seymour, Bondville, Northern Piatt and Sangamon Valley departments helped by bringing in tankers of water to the home, which is north of the Lake of the Woods park and east of Illinois 47.

Shaw said the shed appeared to be large enough to hold a couple of vehicles and a lawn tractor. He described it as an aluminum building with a wood frame.

Firefighters had the fire under control fairly quickly but remained for more than two hours doing overhaul.

"They're taking the siding off," Shaw said. "There will be nothing left by the time they're done."

He said there did not appear to be anything that could be salvaged from inside the shed.
