Steam leak closes part of Main Street in Urbana

URBANA - Main Street in Urbana between Goodwin and Harvey will remain closed to through traffic through Monday morning due to a steam leak.

According to Keith Erickson of the University of Illinois, the Siebel Center and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications will remain without steam service until repairs are complete.

Erickson said that a steam leak was discovered in the steam vault in Main Street, between Goodwin Avenue and Harvey Street, on the north campus, at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

"It appeared that an expansion joint at the end of the twelve inch line failed," he said in a written release. "This was a substantial leak. The manhole lid was blown off the vault. Steam Distribution and Urbana Fire responded immediately, and Steam Distribution was able to promptly valve off the steam."
