Area history, April 22, 2014
Today is Tuesday, April 22, 2014. Here are news reports from this date 100, 50 and 15 years ago:
In 1914: The proposition to rename certain streets of Champaign and to renumber practically all of the blocks, starting with Wright Street as the basis, lost overwhelmingly, 3,052 to 1,477.
In 1964: The raw sewage being dumped into the Saline Ditch does not pose a serious threat of epidemic or health hazard to the people near the ditch or any of the connecting waterways, according to K.L. Baumann, sanitary engineer for the state department of public health. "The dilution of waste materials in water is so great that there is nothing to be concerned about in this case," Baumann said.
In 1999: Most people remain in the dark about who owns the old Robeson's store parking deck, but the new owners have shed some light on their plans for downtown Champaign's largest parking source. "Having just purchased the property we are assessing the needs of the parking deck," said Bank Land Trust 5581/Parking Garage Management in a faxed statement.
