New development being considered for Curtis-Dunlap area in Savoy

A new development project could be in the works in Savoy, and village officials are interested in seeing the project move forward.

The village board heard a presentation this week on the proposed plans for the corner of Curtis Road and Dunlap Avenue.  The area already includes a CVS Pharmacy, but now developer Todd Raufeisen is looking to further develop the location.

The grocery store Aldi has already been discussed as potentially being built in Savoy, and Village Manager Dick Helton says that grocery store is included in these new plans.  Helton said Raufeisen would like some financial help from Savoy to help build an Aldi and a strip center, but Helton said there isn't time to create a new tax increment financing district for that area under the project's timeline.

Helton added that the village board wants to see a "rock solid" plan of how the development will take place and the time period for it before committing funding to the project.  He said Raufeisen is in the process of buying the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 149 property just south of CVS Pharmacy to help expand the project.  Helton said Raufeisen doesn't have a commitment from potential businessees for the strip center or other vacant lots in the proposed development beyond Aldi.

A McDonald's restaurant was initially planned for that same corner with CVS Pharmacy, but the fast food chain backed out of plans to move there last year.
