Two face gun, drug charges

CHAMPAIGN — A Champaign couple were arrested at their home Thursday morning for possessing almost a pound of cannabis and loaded handguns.

Champaign police arrested Shauna Porter, 19, and Ricky Streeter, 20, at a home in the 1000 block of North Hickory Street.

Sgt. Dave Griffet said Officer Amy Petrilli, who is involved in community policing in the city's north district, had received information a couple weeks ago about possible drug activity at that home. Based on her information, police obtained a search warrant for the home and went there Thursday.

Porter, Streeter, Porter's sister and a small child were there.

Griffet said when officers entered the home, they noticed a strong smell of raw cannabis but couldn't immediately locate any.

"Sgt. Dennis Baltzell found a vacuum-sealed bag that had hydroponic cannabis that weighed over a pound. It was in a vent in the bedroom for Shauna and Ricky," Griffet said.

(Hydroponic refers to the method by which the cannabis is grown in a combination of water and minerals without soil.)

Near that bag of cannabis, police found a loaded .38-caliber handgun. They also found a second loaded .38-caliber gun between the mattress and the box springs in that same room. Police also found a scale and packaging materials. Griffet said.

Porter and Streeter were charged Friday with armed violence and possession with intent to deliver cannabis. Porter was also charged with unlawful use of weapons by a felon. Court records show she had a prior conviction for aggravated battery.

Porter is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond and Streeter on $150,000 bond.
Both are due back in court June 10.
