Man faces drug, theft charges
URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly possessed cocaine and a stolen smart phone Saturday is due back in court for a probable cause hearing in two weeks.
Shannon Brown, 30, who listed an address in the 1300 block of West Beardsley Avenue, was arraigned Monday in Champaign County Circuit Court for manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance and misdemeanor theft.
A Champaign police report said a boy took his phone to school, where it was stolen. His mother used the phone's electronic tracking system to locate it and told police where it was.
About 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Champaign police stopped Brown in the 900 block of North Fourth Street and found him in possession of two phones, which he said he'd bought for $50.
A search of Brown also turned up 11 individually wrapped plastic bags containing a total of 4.2 grams of crack cocaine and a small amount of cannabis.
If convicted of the cocaine charge, Brown faces penalties ranging from probation to four to 15 years in prison.
He was also charged with theft for possessing the allegedly stolen phone.
Brown is scheduled to be back in court May 13. He remained in jail Tuesday in lieu of $25,000 bond.
