Urbana police to give away bikes

URBANA — The Urbana Police Department will once again be giving away bikes it has collected in the last several months.

The giveaway takes place from 10 a.m. to noon on May 8, at the public works building at 704 S. Glover St., U.

"Those are abandoned bikes we find in the roadway that we store and give back to the community," said Urbana police Lt. Bob Fitzgerald.

The department began giving the used bicycles away in December 2011 and has conducted the giveaway about twice a year ever since.

"We have about 100 bikes to give away. Every year we've had to turn people away," he said.

Fitzgerald said the police ask that only Champaign County residents take the bicycles, which are limited to one per person.

The bicycles will be offered in as-is condition.

For more information, contact Fitzgerald or Animal Control Warden Michelle McKnight at 217-384-2320 at the police department.
