Oakwood will use interim school chiefs for a year

OAKWOOD — Officials have decided to hire two interim superintendents for the 2014-15 school year, and plan to continue the search for a new full-time superintendent this fall.

Karen Perry announced in January that she'd step down from the position after just two years, citing personal reasons. The school board considered six candidates for the position, President Sue Johnson said, but decided "none were the right fit for the district."

The district can hire an interim superintendent for up to 100 working days, and Johnson said that the Illinois Association of School Boards suggested hiring two for next school year.

Johnson said that the two interim superintendents would work concurrently over the course of the school year — sometimes alternating weeks, sometimes days. That way, the two 100-day contracts should be able to cover the entire school year.

Although the arrangement is unusual, Johnson said it allows the district to cover the upcoming school year and gives the board time to focus on finding the right long-term candidate.

The board will announce the names of the interim superintendents after the contracts are signed.
