Fire hits home in southern Champaign County

PHILO — Fire heavily damaged a home in southern Champaign County.

Firefighters from several area volunteer departments were called at 3:20 p.m. Wednesday to a two-story farmhouse at 1439 County Road 800 N, which is in Philo Township between Tolono and Philo.

Philo Fire Chief Mike McHenry said firefighters from Bondville, Broadlands, Homer, Ivesdale, Longview, St. Joseph-Stanton, Savoy, Sidney, Tolono and Villa Grove provided mutual aid assistance.

“Flames were coming out through the roof on the southeast corner of the house,” McHenry said.

Champaign County Sheriff’s Sgt. Greg Mills said a passerby saw smoke coming from the roof and drove by to investigate.

Mills said the homeowner, Julie Horan, and fellow resident Ronald Mumm, were not home at the time but their dog was and a relative was able to rescue it from the burning home.

Flames could be seen shooting from the second story of the home and a tree nearby was also on fire.

“We used Savoy’s ladder truck and engines from Sidney and Tolono, but all the other trucks were tankers,” McHenry said.

Several area departments were helping Philo firefighters by tanking water to the home.

McHenry said the fire was under control by 6 p.m., and firefighters left the scene by 6:30 p.m.

“It burned the roof off,” McHenry said. “I would consider it to be a total loss.”

The cause of the fire remained under investigation on Wednesday night.

Nobody was reported hurt.
