Third family member dies from Easter crash near Homer
URBANA — A third member of an Indianapolis family involved in a fiery two-vehicle crash in Champaign County on Easter Sunday has died.
Champaign County Coroner Duane Northrup said Otis R. Doxtator, 65, died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday at Carle Foundation Hospital, where he had been since April 20.
Mr. Doxtator died of injuries he received in the crash just north of Homer that also claimed the lives of his wife, Dorothy Doxtator, 62, and their son, Scott Doxtator, 33.
Mrs. Doxtator and Scott Doxtator were pronounced dead at the crash scene at Illinois 49 and Homer Lake Road, north of Homer.
It happened about 12:50 p.m. when a Mercedes-Benz driven by Xiang Cheng, 19, of Champaign, collided with the Doxtators' Jeep Cherokee.
The collision caused both cars to catch fire and firefighters from Homer worked furiously to free the entrapped Doxtators.
Cheng was ticketed for improper lane usage. He had a passenger, Yuhan Zhang, 22, of Urbana. They survived their injuries.
The Doxtators were on their way to the home of their son, Chris Doxtator of Homer, to celebrate Easter.
The collision remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
