Champaign felon charged with having gun
URBANA — A Champaign man who allegedly used a gun to try to break up a fight among several women in Urbana last weekend has been criminally charged.
Donovan Hill, 25, who listed an address in the 1200 block of Mimosa Drive, was charged Friday in Champaign County Circuit Court with unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon.
Urbana police investigator Duane Maxey said Hill was arrested Thursday in connection with a fight last weekend at the Hamilton at the Park apartment complex at the northeast corner of Wright and Eads streets.
Maxey said police were sent there about 2:40 a.m. Saturday because one woman had allegedly stabbed another, then fled to a nearby car in the parking lot for refuge. As the alleged stabber was inside the car, a group of women surrounded the car and were damaging it, Maxey said.
Hill reportedly pulled a gun and threatened the crowd with it in an attempt to get the people away from the car, which Maxey said belonged to Hill's sister.
Maxey said police are still looking for the woman who allegedly stabbed the 30-year-old Champaign woman in the head with a paring knife. The victim was treated and released from the hospital.
Because of a 2013 conviction for possession of a controlled substance, Hill is not allowed to possess a weapon.
Judge Richard Klaus set Hill's bond at $25,000 and told him to be back in court June 24.
