Police investigate robbery, attack on UI campus
URBANA — Police are investigating a Thursday night robbery near the University of Illinois campus.
According to a UI police press release, the victim was walking at 9:45 p.m. in the 1000 block of West Main Street, near Goodwin Avenue, when seven to 10 people exited a van and started throwing rocks at him.
The offenders approached the victim as he tried to leave the area, battered him and stole several items from him. They got back in the minivan and headed east from Harvey Street in the alley between Main and Clark streets.
The suspects were all described as black males who were small in stature, according to UI police, and they may be high school age.
While leaving the scene, the newer model, light blue Dodge or Chrysler minivan backed over a curb and into a pole, which may have left damage on the rear toward the driver's side. It is also possible that the rear tires or wheels of the minivan may have been damaged when it backed over the curb.
The Urbana Police Department is leading the investigation. Witnesses or those with information are encouraged to contact the Urbana Police Department at 217-384-2320 or Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-TIPS (8477).
