Skin cancer screenings offered at Frances Nelson

CHAMPAIGN — Free skin cancer screenings will be offered later this month through Frances Nelson Health Center, 819 Bloomington Road, C.

Screenings will be offered from 1 to 5 p.m. May 21.

It isn't necessary to be a patient of Frances Nelson to get a free screening, but appointments are required by calling 217-356-1558.

The screenings will be done by dermatologist Dr. Elizabeth Small, who is volunteering her time without charge.

Screenings can help with early detection of skin cancer. Most skin cancers, including the more serious melanoma, can be cured if they're detected early, according to Small.

Some advice from the American Academy of Dermatology: Examine your skin for signs of skin cancer; use sunscreen with a minimum SPF (sun protection factor) of 30; wear protective clothing outdoors; avoid tanning beds; and try to avoid full sun exposure between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
