Updated: police search for UI student who went missing from Chicago airport

Chicago police said it appears no criminal activity is involved in the disappearance of a University of Illinois student who did not board a jetliner bound for North Carolina as scheduled.

Police said 19 year-old Hye Min Choi, who's known as Joseph Choi, was last seen on Saturday at O'Hare Airport.  Choi checked in his luggage around 3:10 Saturday afternoon for a United Airlines flight home to North Carolina, but he did not board the flight.   Police said his mother retrieved his luggage in North Carolina.  The airline said Choi did not re-book on United.

A Chicago police spokesman confirmed to the WDWS newsroom that Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy said Choi was apparently having problems during his first year at the Urbana campus, but he did not elaborate on what those problems might entail.  McCarthy also said Choi might not have wanted to go home and that police may have some leads on where he might be.

A University spokesman said Choi is a junior in mechanical engineering. He said UI police determined that Choi had checked out of his residence hall on Saturday.  He also said that Choi had not registered for classes for the fall semester.
