Updated: cleanup continues after Wednesday storms

NEW 2:40 p.m. Thursday:

The head of the Douglas County Emergency Management Agency said it'll likely be weeks until the extent of the damage from Wednesday's hail storm is fully known.

Joe Victor made the comments in reference to the hail that battered the Tuscola area Wednesday afternoon causing damage to homes, businesses and especially, Victor said, vehicles.

Victor is also reminding you to avoid scam artists who swoop in after storms with promises of a quick, cheap repair to your property.  He said you should make sure the company you're doing business with has a good reputation and can produce paperwork to prove that.

Meanwhile, the head of one of the hardest-hit businesses in Tuscola on Wednesday said he's still open for business.

Tim Mooney of Tim Mooney Ford said a large amonut of his fleet of 60 or 70 vehicles was damaged on Wendesday.  That includes around 20 damaged windshields.  Mooney said he's selling some damaged cars at a discounted price and will repair the rest.

UPDATED 11:15 A.M. Rising Road between Curtis and Windsor roads in southwest Champaign has reopened to traffic.

Downed power poles and lines have been repaired, according to  Kris Koster, administrative services supervisor and public information officer for the city of Champaign.

The road was closed after storms blew through the area early Wednesday evening.

NEW 9:30 p.m.

The Experimental Aircraft Association’s B-17 Flying Fortress “Aluminum Overcast” will remain at Willard Airport for a few more days while repairs are being made to it.

A hailstorm that rolled through the Savoy area at about 6 p.m. caused some “minor” damage to the B-17, according to George Daubner, operations manager for the B-17 tour.

“There has been some damage to the fabric control surfaces,” Daubner said. “The regulations that we have to live by will not allow flight with those surfaces damaged.”

A crew was already working on the plane on Wednesday night, but Daubner said his organization was cancelling the next scheduled stop for the B-17 tour at Columbus, Ohio.

“We were supposed to be going to Columbus on Thursday, but we will be pulling the plug on that tour stop because there is no way we will have it to a point where we can put people back on it,” he said. “We want it to be 100 percent repaired to FAA standards.”

Meanwhile more than 100 cars and trucks in the parking lots around Willard Airport received some damage to the hoods, roofs and/or trunks.

Chuck Burmeister of White Heath said the storm made more than 100 marks on his vehicle.

“It didn’t have a scratch on it before today,” he said.

Tom Miller of Clinton said hailstones also hit his car.

“But my vehicle is an old beater, so I don’t care,” he said with a smile.

“It was pretty big,” Moody said. “Some of the hail was as large as four inches. It smashed out the front window of my Chrysler Town & Country minivan sitting in my driveway. And that van is only 3 months old.”

Moody said there was significant hail damage in the downtown area.

“Every car at City Hall had its windshield smashed,” Moody said. “A lot of streets are covered with leaves, and there was minor tree damage.”

He said many streets in Tuscola were temporarily flooded, but the water had already begun to subside by 5 p.m.
