Man on probation in drug case charged in new drug case
URBANA — An Urbana man already serving a sentence of probation for a drug-related offense has been charged with another.
Jonte Powell, 19, who listed an address in the 200 block of Dodson Drive, was charged Friday with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in connection with his arrest Thursday.
Champaign County sheriff's Lt. Curt Apperson said Powell was arrested in north Urbana for allegedly having heroin for sale.
Apperson said sheriff's drug detectives tried to stop Powell at a business in the 1800 block of North Cunningham Avenue about 2:30 p.m. after he was involved in an alleged drug transaction. Powell allegedly ran from the deputies into a nearby restaurant.
"We believe he got rid of the drugs by flushing them down the toilet," Apperson said.
However, deputies recovered about $2,938 from Powell and about a gram of heroin, Apperson said.
Court records show Powell was convicted in June of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance in connection with his arrest in April by Champaign police. He was sentenced to two years of probation.
If convicted of the latest drug charge, he faces penalties ranging from three to14 years in prison.
He's being held on $25,000 bond and is due back in court July 15.
