Crimestoppers hosts shredding event

CHAMPAIGN — Champaign County Crimestoppers is hosting a shredding event on May 31, in the parking lot immediately west of the State Farm Center in Champaign.

From 9 to 11 a.m., Monster Shred, a local company, will accept medical records, financial statements, credit applications, bank statements, documents with Social Security numbers or driver's license numbers, bank checks, tax records and legal documents over eight years old for shredding.

Organizers ask that participants limit what they bring to two banker's size boxes.

A release from Crimestoppers said there has been remarkable support for the annual event, which is aimed at helping to stop identity theft, while saving trees and landfill space.

Crimestoppers is asking for a donation of $5 to help the organization pay for future rewards for those people who supply tips to police to solve crime.

The shredding truck will be south of Kirby and just west of First Street.
