Bement reconsiders golf cart ordinance

BEMENT — With the state now allowing golf carts to cross some state highways, Bement Village Board members are discussing the benefits and possible pitfalls of allowing them.

The village had pursued a golf cart ordinance in 2012, only to be denied by the Illinois Department of Transportation because Illinois 105 runs through the village.

Village President Pat Tieman said his main concern is having carts crossing the highway.

"I live and work on Route 105 and I see people fly up and down that road," he said. "We just need to be aware of that."

Overall, however, members sound supportive of reapplying for an ordinance.

"If the state says it OK, I'm all for it," Chad Corum said.

The board will continue to discuss the issue at future meetings. For now, golf carts remain illegal to drive within the village limits.
