Tip leads to arrest on gun, drug charges
URBANA — A Champaign woman who police say had a gun and drugs in a car in northwest Champaign has been charged with a number of felonies.
Ashley Wells, 26, of the 1100 block of West Bradley Avenue, was arrested close to midnight Friday by Champaign County sheriff's deputies.
Lt. Curt Apperson said deputies received an anonymous tip that there was a person with a gun in a car in the Dobbins Downs neighborhood.
Apperson said a deputy found the car that had been described to them in the 1500 block of Kings Way. Wells was the driver and was alone in the car, he said.
In plain sight under the driver's seat, deputies saw a revolver. Apperson said the gun was loaded.
A search of the car also turned up a small amount of cannabis and two unlabeled medicine bottles, one containing what was believed to be a prescription muscle relaxer and the other believed to contain morphine. A third bottle had an unidentified liquid in it, he said, that was sent to the crime lab for analysis.
Wells was charged Tuesday with armed violence, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and two counts of possession of a controlled substance.
If convicted of the most serious of the charges, she faces six to 30 years in prison.
Judge John Kennedy set Wells' bond at $75,000 and told her to be back in court July 22.
