Trucker ticketed in four-vehicle crash on I-74

A truck driver was ticketed after a four-vehicle crash west of Champaign on Wednesday morning.

According to a state police report, Francis Waith, 68, of Sioux Falls, S.D., was driving a tractor-trailer east on Interstate 74 at the Prairieview Road exit at 8:15 a.m. and didn’t see that traffic had slowed ahead. Waith was unable to avoid hitting a second tractor-trailer, sideswiping it. Waith’s truck then hit two cars in the passing lane.

The drivers of the cars were injured, but no further information on them was available.

Waith was ticketed for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident and for driving beyond a 14-hour duty period.

All the drivers were wearing seat belts.
