Man gets three years for stealing bolt cutters

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted he stole bolt cutters from an Urbana business last month has been sentenced to three years in prison.

Mark A. Ambrose, 38, whose last known address was in the 400 block of Briar Lane, pleaded guilty Thursday to theft with a prior theft.

He admitted to Champaign County Judge Harry Clem that on April 27, he shoplifted the tool from Harbor Freight Tools, 1508 N. Cunningham Ave., U.

Assistant State's Attorney Scott Larson said Ambrose had prior convictions for theft, possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance.

In exchange for his guilty plea, another case charging him with possession of burglary tools and possession of a controlled substance was dismissed.

This seems a rather extreme penalty for the crime and history of the suspect. I don't believe that society is served by costing the taxpayer $120,000 to keep this shoplifter locked up for 3 years.

I'm not saying the guy is an angel. I don't even know him. But this punishment does not fit the crime, IMO.
