Crimestoppers document shred event set for Saturday

Champaign County Crimestoppers is once again offering you a secure way to dispose of important personal documents.

The crime-fighting group will hold its fifth annual Shred-It Event Saturday in Champaign.

Crimestoppers Board President John Hecker said shredding your personal documents is the best way to protect yourself from identity theft.



You're urged to shred personal documents such as medical records, financial statements, credit applications, bank statements and checks and documents displaying your social security or driver's license numbers.

For the Shred-It Event, you're limited to two boxes the size of a Banker Box or standard carton to make sure more people can be served.  Crimestoppers is also requestsing a $5 donation to go toward paying future rewards.

The Shred-It Event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday in parking lot E-14, which is located on the southwest corner of First and Kirby.
 
The Crimestoppers program offers rewards of up to $1,000 for anonymous tips that lead to arrests in cases across Champaign County.
