Unity West to get new principal
TOLONO — Unity West Elementary will have a new principal next school year.
The Unit 7 school board voted to hire Lanee Reichert, who is now employed as assistant principal at Champaign's Westview Elementary.
Reichert has taught special education.
"She's very personable," Unit 7 Superintendent Andrew Larson said. "I think we found a real diamond. She brings a lot of elementary-based knowledge to the table."
A total of 38 candidates applied to replace Janet Ellis-Nelson, who is retiring at the end of this school year. Of those, the school board screened 12 applications and interviewed five people.
Reichert received her bachelor's and master's degrees in special education and a degree in educational leadership from the University of Illinois. She is also certified to train in ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate), a school safety program that teaches students and staff to actively resist an armed intruder.
Nelson has been principal at Unity West since 2005.
