Bement man sentenced to probation in cannabis case

URBANA — A Bement man who admitted he had cannabis intended for sale in Urbana late last year has been sentenced to two years of first offender probation.

Michael Bentley, 26, will have no record of a conviction if he successfully completes the supervision without getting in any other trouble. He was also ordered to perform 30 hours of public service. He pleaded guilty Monday before Champaign County Judge Heidi Ladd.

In exchange for Bentley's guilty plea to possession with intent to deliver 10 to 30 grams of cannabis and his willingness to testify in future proceedings, Assistant State's Attorney Dan Clifton dismissed more serious charges alleging Bentley had a lot more cannabis.

Bentley and co-defendant Ryan L. Sample, 26, of Littleton, Colo., were arrested on Dec. 22 in a car that a sheriff's deputy pulled over on Country Club Lane in Urbana because Bentley had a suspended driver's license. Sample was his passenger.

Noticing a strong odor of cannabis, deputies searched the car and found about 4 1/2 ounces of cannabis and almost $4,000 in cash. They also searched a motel room in north Champaign, where they found another 10 pounds of suspected cannabis.

Clifton said Class 1 and 2 felony charges of possession with intent to deliver cannabis are pending against Sample, who, after being arraigned Dec. 23, never came back to court. His bond was forfeited in February.

Authorities said at the time of the arrests that Sample had a medical marijuana card issued in Colorado.

Clifton said Bentley had no prior convictions.
