Capital bill has $40 million in road projects for area counties

SPRINGFIELD — The $1.1 billion capital bill approved by Illinois lawmakers in one of their last acts in the spring legislative session includes about $40 million in road and bridge projects for Champaign and Vermilion counties.

"These are all projects that were vetted by the engineers at (the Illinois Department of Transportation) and are shovel-ready and will be built this summer," said state Rep. Chad Hays, R-Catlin.

"What some people had feared from a capital bill this spring was that it would be full of pork projects," Hays said. "But Minority Leader Jim Durkin said he was open to a capital bill that would include projects that were already in the queue at IDOT, and that's what we got."
