Man charged in drug case
URBANA — An Urbana man who allegedly had cocaine he intended to sell has been charged with that offense.
Alonzo Jarrell, 47, of the 300 block of South Scottswood Drive, was arrested Sunday by Champaign police. He is charged with possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.
State's Attorney Julia Rietz said officers were investigating robberies in the area of Randolph and Tremont streets and that Jarrell was wearing clothes that matched the description they had. He was also riding a bicycle without a light.
Officers attempted to stop him but he rode away. He was eventually stopped and said he hadn't heard the officers because he was listening to music on his headphones, even though he was not wearing headphones.
Police searched him and turned up two bags that field tested positive for cocaine. They weighed a total of five grams.
Jarrell initially gave officers a false name, then gave his real name. He had an outstanding warrant for his arrest in a DUI case, Rietz said.
Rietz said Jarrell is also on probation for a 2013 aggravated battery conviction.
Judge John Kennedy set Jarrell's bond at $25,000 and told him to be back in court Tuesday for a probable cause hearing.
