Man sentenced to four years of probation for aggravated criminal sexual abuse

URBANA — A Champaign man who admitted fondling a girl who recorded the activity on a cellphone has been sentenced to four years of probation.

Gayeh Jones, 34, who listed an address in the 1600 block of West Healey Street, had pleaded guilty in April to a single count of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, admitting sexual contact with the girl, who was under 13, that happened between October 2012 and May 2013.

Judge Harry Clem also ordered Jones to register for life as a sex offender, perform 100 hours of public service, and have no unsupervised conduct with children under 18.

Assistant State's Attorney Lindsey Clark, who had sought a prison term for Jones, said the conduct with the girl happened on more than one occasion. She reported it to her mother, who then gave the girl a cellphone and instructed her to record it in the event it happened again. The girl did and she and the mother took the evidence to Champaign police.

Jones was arrested last September and has been in the county jail since then.

Clark said Jones had no previous criminal record.
