Man charged with aggravated criminal sexual abuse

URBANA — A Champaign man remained jailed Friday after being charged with having sex with an underage teen.

State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Robert Krakoviak, 21, who listed an address in the 300 block of Kelly Court, was charged with three counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old Mahomet girl in late April.

Rietz said the girl had been absent from school for four days and when asked by a vice principal about where she'd been, replied she was with a man she met on Facebook who was 21.

School officials contacted police. A Champaign County sheriff's investigator interviewed Krakoviak, who admitted having sex with the girl and thinking that she was 16. He told the deputy he thought she was mature for her age and that he didn't know it was illegal for him to have sex with her.

If convicted, Krakoviak faces penalties ranging from probation to three to seven years in prison.

A warrant had been issued for his arrested in mid-May. He appeared in court Thursday and was told to come back June 19 with an attorney.

Judge John Kennedy ordered that Krakoviak's bond remain at $150,000.
