Man sentenced to three years for slamming door on officer's foot

URBANA — A man who admitted he slammed a door on a police officer's foot is headed to prison.

Terry Cozad, 49, homeless, pleaded guilty Friday before Champaign County Judge Tom Difanis to aggravated battery, admitting that on April 17, he closed a door on the foot of a Champaign police officer.

Assistant State's Attorney Troy Lozar said the officer responded to a call of a person inside a home in the 400 block of East White Street where the glass pane of a door had been broken out.

The officer confronted Cozad, who was apparently intoxicated, Lozar said. The two got into an argument that culminated with Cozad slamming the door on the officer's foot.

Cozad was sentenced to three years in prison.

Lozar said Cozad had several prior convictions for burglary, battery, domestic battery, theft and driving under suspension.
