Teen hit by shot in Urbana parking lot

URBANA — An Urbana teen was treated at a local hospital after being hit by a piece of a bullet early Saturday in a downtown parking lot.

An Urbana police report said an unknown person fired a shot in a crowded lot outside the Landmark Hotel, 210 S. Race St., just before 1 a.m.

The bullet or shards from it hit a 17-year-old male in the neck and broke the window of a car belonging to a Champaign teen.

Police said the victim was treated and released from Carle Foundation Hospital.

Police were unable to get a description of the shooter.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Urbana Police Department at 384-2320 or Crimestoppers at 373-8477.

What event was taking place outside the hotel around 1:00AM Saturday that resulted in shooting in a crowded lot?  What was a 17 year old doing there at that time?  Was it a family reunion?  Who, what, when, where, why?

Couldn't the story have included such basic information about what was going on?

I would like to know, so I can be sure avoid the area around any such future event.

That parking lot is never "crowded," so it must have been some impromptu get-together that probably didn't have a permit from the city or the hotel.  Why would anyone need a gun at an "event," anyway?  Was it a gun show at 1:00 a.m.?  Need more details.
