Champaign man sentenced to probation

URBANA — A man who admitted having cannabis intended for sale at an apartment in the campus area has been sentenced to two years of probation.

Christian Cler, 25, who listed addresses in the 300 block of East John Street, Champaign, and on Pond Ridge Lane in Urbana, pleaded guilty earlier this month before Champaign County Judge Harry Clem to possession with intent to deliver between 10 and 30 grams of cannabis.

The cannabis were found Feb. 27 in the John Street apartment during a court-authorized search done by University of Illinois police.

Co-defendant Idel Martinez, 20, of the John Street address, pleaded guilty to the same charge in April and was sentenced to first offender probation.

In addition to the small amount of cannabis, police found a backpack containing $8,960 and in Martinez’s possession a little over $2,000.

The state is taking steps to seize that cash.

Court records show Cler has prior convictions for theft, possession of a stolen firearm, possession with intent to deliver cannabis and aggravated assault.
