Gibson City residents petition to allow chickens

By Ryan Ferguson

GIBSON CITY — A local resident is urging the city council to allow chickens to be kept within city limits.

Molly Baker, 23, presented the council with a petition with 180 signatures supporting the idea. She noted that these "backyard chickens" would be only hens and not roosters, muting any possible noise issues.

Baker pointed out that Champaign has an ordinance that allows chickens within its city limits, and she presented handouts highlighting those rules, proposed guidelines and benefits to the city.

Groups and businesses such as 4-H, Big R and the farmer's market would potentially reap the positives from a change in the city's ordinance, Baker said.

Alderman Jan Hall said she and the other council members will discuss Baker's proposal, in addition to several other ordinances, during an ordinance committee meeting at a time to be determined. Originally scheduled for Tuesday, the committee was forced to alter that date due to schedule conflicts.
