Man arrested after Jeep stolen
RANTOUL — Police arrested a Paxton man Saturday night after they found him in Rantoul driving a Jeep that had been taken by force from another man.
Kyle Messer, 26, was charged Monday with vehicular hijacking and receiving or possessing a stolen vehicle. He is due back in court June 24.
According to a Rantoul police report, a man called 911 Saturday to report that Messer had kicked him in the head and took his car in the area of Champaign Avenue and Steffler Street. The victim told police that he and Messer were friends from high school, and they came to Rantoul in the victim’s Jeep to look for some marijuana.
Messer told the victim that he wanted to buy cocaine instead, but the victim said he wasn’t into that.
The two of them began to argue, and Messer started kicking the victim in the head before he got control of the Jeep and drove away in it.
Police found the Jeep in the area of Wabash Avenue and Lincoln Street with Messer behind the wheel at 8:49 p.m. Saturday and arrested him.
