Rantoul man faces gun charge

URBANA — A Rantoul man is being held at the Champaign County Jail on $50,000 bond after police found him with a semiautomatic pistol during a fight outside a Rantoul pub.

Dennis P. Droughns, 33, was charged Monday with felony unlawful use of a weapon. He is due back in court July 22.

According to a police report, officers were called to a fight involving 15 to 20 people in the 100 block of East Congress Avenue at 12:35 a.m. Sunday.

When they arrived, they found Droughns fighting with another man outside the Rantoul Pizza Pub, 114 E. Congress Ave. Droughns was on his back with the other man on top of him. Police found a black 9 mm semi-automatic pistol on the ground next to Droughns. The gun was loaded with a round in the chamber and the safety off.

The victim and a witness told police that Droughns had confronted the victim about a prior argument. Droughns reportedly displayed the gun, pointed it at the victim and said, “I ought to pop you now.” The victim and Droughns were fighting over the gun as the officers arrived.
