Savoy man charged with DUI, weapons offenses

URBANA — A Savoy man arrested last weekend in Philo Township for allegedly driving under the influence is scheduled to appear in court next month on a variety of criminal charges.

Champaign County sheriff’s Lt. Curt Apperson said John W. Gadau, 35, who listed an address in the 100 block of Portsmouth Lane, was stopped about 12:50 a.m. June 14 near the intersection of county roads 1350 E and 1100 N.

Apperson said the deputy noted that Gadau did not come to a complete stop and that his license plate was not properly illuminated.

The deputy noticed that Gadau had bloodshot, glassy, watery eyes and could smell alcohol on him. Apperson said Gadau failed field sobriety tests but refused a breathalyzer test.

After Gadau’s arrest for DUI, the deputy searched Gadau’s car and found a shopping bag that contained ammunition and an uncased revolver for which Gadau had no concealed carry license or firearm owner’s identification card, Apperson said.

The state’s attorney’s office filed charges of aggravated unlawful use of weapons, possession of a firearm without an FOID, and DUI.

Gadau was issued a summons to appear in court July 10 to be arraigned on the charges.

I sometimes wonder whether defendants read Mary Schenck's reporting, between the lines. This report says "challenge the validity of the arrest."
