17-year-old wanted in Danville shooting arrested in Chicago

DANVILLE — A 17-year-old Danville man is behind bars in connection with a shooting that injured three people on Friday.

Danville Public Safety Director Larry Thomason said Malachi D. Hatcher was taken into custody by Chicago police Tuesday. He was arrested on a warrant for aggravated battery.

Hatcher, who previously lived in Chicago, is awaiting return to Vermilion County, where he will be formally charged. His bond was set at $1 million.

Hatcher is accused of shooting three people in the first block of Kentucky Street around 12:30 a.m. Friday.

When police arrived at the scene, they found a 44-year-old male, a 46-year-old female and a 16-year old male injured from what appeared to be gunshots. All three had been outside on the porch prior to the shooting, witnesses said.

The two male victims were rushed to an Urbana hospital, while the female was taken to Presence United Samaritans Medical Center, where she was treated and released.

"Their injuries were not life-threatening," Thomason said, adding that police have not yet released the victims' names.
